February 7th falls on a Sunday this year and marks National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. This is a very important day for all Americans regardless of race to keep in mind, as people may not be aware that HIV/AIDS disproportionately strikes African-Americans of all ages in this country.

The statistics are quite staggering. According to the CDC’s National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day page, an estimated 1.1 million people live with HIV infection, and 46% of those are African-American. Yet blacks only represent 12% of the United States population.

The National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day official page offers more sobering facts. For example, “Blacks accounted for 51% of the 42,655 (including children) new HIV/AIDS diagnoses in 34 states with long-term, confidential name-based HIV reporting.” This is definitely not a crisis on the wane, and there is a lot to be done.

Extremely important for all, but especially the black community, is to make sure you are HIV negative by getting tested regularly. This can have a huge impact on the problem. It’s one of the reasons a main strategy employed on this day is a massive HIV testing push. If people can get in the habit of testing themselves annually or bi-annually, some of the stigma of testing will vanish, and healthier communities and individuals will result.

Have you ever heard of a bionic arm? (Pause for response)

(if the child hasn’t heard about the million dollar man on TV, explain something about it, especially about his unusual, powerful arm)

I want to tell you something else about the million dollar man that most people don’t know, but you’d probably go around telling everyone else. (Pause for response)

(Usually you get the child going, and he/she promises to keep it a secret)

Would you really like to know something special about his arm? (Pause for response)

(Optional: If using music, start it at this point)

One day the million dollar man was sitting at home, listening to music on his radio, and all of a sudden he noticed something very unusual about his arm, (watch to see if his/her eyes move left or right. Then use the arm on the side towards which his/her eyes moved)

(Lift his/her arm) Yes, that’s it. It’s that arm. It started becoming very stiff, and soon became as stiff as a board, (stroke the arm and say) notice that it keeps becoming stiffer … As stiff as a board.

That’s a very special arm, as it keeps becoming stiffer your eyes close and you begin having a very pleasant dream, because that’s your dreaming arm.

You can hear the music playing as you are beginning to have a very pleasant dream … Watch the whole dream, and your arm will go down only as fast as you see the whole dream.

How To Keep Your Eyes Looking Young And Healthy

Here are some things you can do to care for your eyes to help keep them looking young and healthy.

1.If you have red, watery eyes due to allergies, deal with them! There are plenty of medications available to eliminate allergy symptoms. Nothing will detract from your appearance faster than red eyes.

2.If you wear eyeglasses, make certain that they do not detract from your appearance. Eyeglasses should complement your eyes, not cover them. If your frames are unattractive, it means you had the wrong sales person. Try again.

3.If you can wear them, consider switching to contact lenses. Make sure you remember to remove them when swimming. You can easily lose them in the pool or worse, if you wear soft lenses you could contract a cornea infection that comes from a parasite found in water. The chlorine won't kill it and the result of this nasty little dude is not pleasant. You are inviting painful corneal infection that could cause partial or total blindness.

4.Try buying different colored lenses. You might discover a whole new you behind blue eyes!

5.Better yet, check out lasik. If you are a candidate it might give you a whole new lease on life. Of course, it's a treatment for nearsightedness only, but if that's your reason for wearing eyeglasses or contact lenses, you might want to look into it. Using the same mascara over and over again leaves you wide open for possible infection. Bacteria are alive and well and flourishing on your trusty little mascara wand. Pitch it out before it gives you trouble. Mascara should be replaced at least every 6 weeks.

10.Use special eye moisturizer to keep tissue around the eyes soft and pliable. The skin around the eyes is very thin and easily damaged.

Signs, Symptoms and Treatment of a Yeast Infection

A yeast infection is simply a fungal infection. Its clinical name is candidiasis. A yeast infection occurs when fungus in the body is placed in an environment which allows it to grow and spread. The fungus then becomes overgrown in the body leading to a yeast infection. There are many causes for a yeast infection and in most cases is easily treated and cured. In some cases yeast infections can become resistant to treatment and become life threatening.

The most common causes for yeast infections are the use of antibiotics and steroids. These medications kill the bacteria that live with the yeast that is usually in the body. Once the bacterium is killed it allows the yeast to over grow and form an unsafe level of yeast in the body. This is known as a yeast infection. Other causes for a yeast infection include a weak immune system, birth control pills, pregnancy, diabetes, and obesity.

Yeast thrives in moist, warm and dark places. The mouth, vagina, skin folds, diaper area and arm pits are the most common locations for yeast infections because they are the perfect breeding grounds for yeast. Those who are overweight can find yeast infections on the skin due to skin folds. Yeast is common under the breast and lower abdomen because of the excess weight. Yeast infections are most common in women and infants
, but men can also have yeast infections. Penile yeast infections are not common but can occur if a sexual partner has a yeast infection.

Depending upon where the yeast infection occurs there will be different signs and symptoms. In a vaginal yeast infection the infected area will have an extreme itch, sore and even a white cheesy discharge. A yeast infection of the mouth otherwise known as thrush will also have pain associated with it and the throat, tongue and checks will have white creamy milk like discharge which is difficult to wipe away. The last type of yeast infection known as a superficial yeast infection is one that occurs on the surface of the skin. This type of yeast infection will be seen as a red rash with scalloped edges. This type of rash is commonly found in the diaper area of infants and under skin folds.

Treatments of yeast infections use basically the same type of medication but in different forms for each type of infection. For the most common vaginal yeast infections treatment can be performed at home with over the counter anti fungal medication. Monistat and Femstat are two of the most common at home treatments for a vaginal yeast infection. A cream or ovule is placed in the vagina and left there for 1-7 days until the infection has cleared.

Yeast infections of the skin can also be treated with an over the counter anti fungal lotion like Lotrimin. In infants doctors will prescribe an ointment safe for children, usually called nystatin. Yeast infections of the mouth will require a prescription mouth wash. This mouth wash also contains an anti fungal medication in it. Young children with thrush are limited to this type of treatment while adults can also use a prescription medication along with the mouth wash treatment.

There are also home remedies that can be used to successful treat yeast infections as well as a prescription medication called Diflucan. If you are prone to getting yeast infection it is wise to start the Diflucan medication along with antibiotic or steroid treatments.
